The part of podcasting people feel… even if they can't name it.

Hi Newsletter Subscribers,

This week I want to talk about something a bit different.

Not pitching.
Not hooks.
Not gear.

It's the thing that quietly separates “I half-listened while doing the dishes” from
“I actually remember that episode and want more from this person.”

I've been thinking about it a lot lately watching how people listen, scroll, and drop off.

I'm calling it Listener Experience Design.

Not a fancy framework. Just a simple idea:

How does it feel to be on the other end of your episode?

How easy is it to follow?
Where do they lean in?
Where do they drift?
Do they feel guided… or dragged?

Today is just a taster. A way to start noticing this without making your life harder.

🔔 Quick note: Sale continues till Friday (by popular demand)

A bunch of you messaged saying you missed the sale window or needed to wait until this week.

So — by popular demand, the sale is continuing until Friday.

Okay. Back to our regularly scheduled nerding out about audio and humans.

🎧 Listener Experience Design — A Tiny Taster

Listener Experience Design isn't about having “perfect production.”

It's about the emotional + cognitive journey your listener goes on while they're with you.

Think:
  • How hard they have to work to understand you
  • Whether the episode has a pulse or feels flat
  • Whether the story / conversation is going somewhere
  • Whether they leave feeling full, not foggy
Most people never think about this layer.
But once you do, it's hard to unsee — and your episodes change fast.

Here are three simple doors into the idea.

1️⃣ Pacing & Pauses: the hidden texture of your episode

The way you move through ideas — fast, slow, with pauses or without — quietly controls how your episode feels.

A fast stretch can raise energy.
A slower stretch can make an idea land.
A pause gives listeners a beat to catch up or feel something.

There's a nice breakdown of this in:

“Mastering Silence: The Art of Using Pauses and Pacing”

You don't have to overthink it.
Just start noticing:
“Where could I pause for one extra second so this point actually lands?”

2️⃣ Structure = cognitive ease

Cognitive ease just means: this feels easy to follow.

Good structure helps your listener relax into the episode instead of constantly trying to figure out where you're going.

Things that improve cognitive ease:
  • One main idea at a time
  • Clear transitions (“Okay, let's shift to…” / “The second piece is…”)
  • Light signposting (“First, we'll look at X. Then Y. Then what to try this week.”)
There's a solid, practical guide on this here:

“How to Structure a Podcast to Keep Listeners Engaged”
https://lowerstreet.co/how-to/structure-podcast

You don't need a script.
You just need a skeleton your brain can hang the conversation on.

3️⃣ Storytelling = the emotional arc

Even when you're “just teaching,” there's still an emotional journey:

Curiosity → tension → realization → clarity.

If everything is flat, polite, and samey from start to finish, people drift — even if the information is good.

This doesn't mean you have to perform.
It just means:
  • bring a moment of tension (a mistake, a misconception, a “most people get this wrong”)
  • bring a moment of resolution (the shift, the insight, the thing that suddenly makes sense)
A nice, simple primer on this:
“Storytelling Techniques for Engaging Podcast Content”
https://www.podzay.com/blog/storytelling-techniques-for-engaging-podcast-content/

Again: we're not trying to win an Oscar.
We're just giving the episode a heartbeat.

🧩 Why this matters (for both hosts and guests)

Listener Experience Design is the “feel layer.”

Most listeners can't explain it.
But they absolutely feel it.

When you start lightly paying attention to:
  • pacing
  • pauses
  • structure
  • emotional arc
…your episodes become:
  • easier to follow
  • more bingeable
  • more shareable
  • and more “I actually remember you”
No extra gear.
No rebrand.
Just a bit more intention.

💬 If you want more of this…

If this sparks something and you'd like a deeper dive, tell me.
Next time, we can break down:
  • how to plan a simple emotional arc for an episode
  • ways guests can adjust their delivery to feel more “listenable”
  • quick tweaks hosts can make in intros and transitions to improve the whole experience
Hit reply with a “more of this please” and I'll take that as a sign to keep going.

With excitement,

P.S.
You don't need to change everything.
Just noticing listener experience once per episode already puts you ahead of most podcasters.
