✉️ From Guest to Host — The Natural Next Step

Hi Newsletter Subscribers,

A funny thing happens once you've been a guest a few times:
you start hearing questions you wish you could ask.

That's usually the first sign you're ready for the next step — not necessarily launching a full podcast, but learning to think like a host.

Because the best guests aren't just great talkers. They understand what hosts need, how to guide a story, and how to make a conversation land.

This week, let's look at what that shift really means — and how you can try it out without building a studio or a production schedule.

🎙️ 1️⃣ You Already Know 80% of Hosting

If you've guested even a few times, you've done the hardest parts of hosting already:
  • You prepare fast. You know how to enter a topic midstream and keep it engaging.
  • You adapt to tone. You've matched dozens of hosts' styles — energy, humor, flow.
  • You think in takeaways. You've learned to close loops and leave listeners with something useful.
Hosting is just doing those things — but from the other side of the table.

Action this week:
Pick one question you get asked a lot in interviews. Instead of answering it again, ask it to three people in your network. See what happens when you hold the mic, even casually in a voice note or Zoom chat.

🧠 2️⃣ Try “Micro Hosting”

You don't need to start a podcast to build host habits.
You just need to practice guiding conversations.

Low-lift ways to start:
  • Run a 10-minute co-interview on LinkedIn or Instagram Live with another guest (“Let's unpack one question we both get”).
  • Host a member table during the next virtual mixer and lead a mini discussion.
  • Record a short audio note where you introduce a clip or explain what someone else taught you — practice framing, not performing.
It's about direction, not control. Good hosts know how to set context and let others shine.

🧩 3️⃣ Think Like a Host Even When You're a Guest

This one's simple: next time you're invited to a show, show up like a co-host.

That means:
  • Have one question you'd love to ask the host about their audience.
  • Offer one segment idea (“Want me to share a short listener story to close the loop?”).
  • Guide the flow when it drifts — gently, like you're steering a conversation, not waiting to be rescued.

Hosts notice that kind of presence. They'll trust you faster — and they'll often invite you back or refer you as “someone who could carry their own show.”

🧰 For Our Valued Subscribers

Here's a short exercise to try this week:
“Host-in-a-Guest-Chair” Drill
  1. Pick one of your past episodes (or a show you love).
  2. Listen again — but this time, note what the host did, not what they said:
    How did they open?
    When did they change gears?
How did they hand control back to the guest?
  3. Write down what you'd do differently or keep the same.
If you start noticing the architecture of an episode, you're already thinking like a host.

🎯 Challenge of the Week

Send a message to someone you've guested alongside and say:

“You know, we could actually host a short chat on [topic]. No show, just a live 15-minute conversation — want to try?”

You'll learn more about hosting in that one session than in ten theory videos.
