Hi Newsletter Subscribers,

Whether you're behind the mic or in the hot seat, you're probably trying to hide something.

But what if that thing you're hiding...

...is the most interesting thing about you?

The "Boring" Details You Leave Out…(Guests)

We're the worst judges of our own importance.

Think about the things you do every day that you never talk about:
  • Having full conversations with your pets…
  • Eating your vegetables first…
  • Counting steps between rooms…
  • Doodling in the margins while taking notes…
  • Taking photos you'll never look at again…
  • Always leaving one bite on your plate…
You've been doing these things forever. Never thought to mention them. Just part of who you are, your rhythm.

But look at the conversations hiding in these mundane moments:

"Having full conversations with your pets" → What do you tell them? Do you pause for their "response"? What does that say about how you process your day?

"Eating vegetables first" → When did this start? Do you approach other parts of life this way - hard things first? What are you really saving for last?

"Counting steps between rooms" → Every room or just some? What happens if you lose count? Is it about control, rhythm, or something else?

These threads make you human. You may assume there's no value in sharing them. But…

That's not for you to judge.

Your mundane might be exactly what someone needed to hear today. Not to solve their problems. Just to make their Tuesday a little better.

The Two Questions You Need to be Asking…(Hosts)

Forget asking about their biggest win. Try these instead:

"Walk me through yesterday."

Not their ideal day. Just... yesterday. Watch them realize their random Wednesday includes 47 interesting choices they never mention.

"Give me three things you do every day that no one knows you do."

This question does something magical – it bypasses their brand completely. They can't default to their morning routine (everyone knows that). They have to dig deeper, past the curated identity, to the human underneath.

These questions work because they make the persona irrelevant. No prepared speech covers "what I did yesterday." No elevator pitch includes the weird things you do when no one's watching.

The Simple Truth…

People can't connect with what you don't show them…

They think they want your masterpiece – your success story, your polished wisdom. But what creates actual connection?

The mess. The mundane Tuesday. The three things you do that no one knows about.

When you give guests a stage to become instead of curate, when you ask questions that bypass the performance – that's when the magic happens.

Not because it's professional. Because it's human.

Your mess gives depth to your success. It's the difference between a resume and a real person. Between content and connection.

The philosopher Alexander Nehamas talks about viewing life as art rather than a report card.

"What matters is not to eliminate our imperfections but to give them a place within a whole that is admirable despite—or even because of—them."

Same goes for podcasting. The metrics miss what matters – that moment when someone realizes they're not the only one who counts steps between rooms.

That's the tapestry. We each bring our odd threads, and suddenly everyone sees the quilt of our shared humanity.
