Prepping for a Great Interview โ€” Updated with What We've Learned

ย

Hi Newsletter Subscribers,

Back in early April, we shared one of our most popular newsletters: how to introduce yourself like a pro on podcasts.
ย
It covered one-liners, host intros, and how to make yourself easy to work with. And you all loved it.
ย
But since then, we've had some great conversations, read through member feedback, and dug deeper into what makes a truly great guestโ€”or host.
ย
So we're revisiting the topicโ€”with new insights, new tools, and a more complete approach to prep.

ย

But first let's highlight this week's featured episodes:

โœจ 1. BEFORE YOU RECORD: Prep Materials That Make You Memorable

ย

๐ŸŽฏ The Basics Every Guest Should Prepare
Use this checklist before any recording session:
โœ”๏ธ A 2โ€“3 sentence host intro (so the host doesn't have to wing it)
โœ”๏ธ A crisp, listener-facing one-liner
โœ”๏ธ A short "promote me" blurb (more below)
โœ”๏ธ Website link or resource URL
โœ”๏ธ Optional: 2โ€“3 sample questions the host can ask
โœ”๏ธ Bonus: Pronunciation guide or name clarification (if needed)
โœ๏ธ Tip: Store all this in a shared Google Doc or Notion page so it's always ready to go.

ย

๐Ÿง  2. WRITE A HOST INTRO THAT WORKS

ย

๐Ÿ“Œ Formula:
Who you are
Who you help
What transformation you provide
๐Ÿ“ข Example:
โ€œJoining us today is Rachel Lee, a business coach who helps overwhelmed service providers create scalable offers and reclaim their time. She's the founder of Freedom Formula, and her work has helped dozens of entrepreneurs build sustainable businesses without burnout.โ€
โœ… Make it sound spoken, not formal. Keep it under 60 seconds read aloud.

๐Ÿ’ฌ 3. YOUR ONE-LINER: Deliver Value Fast

When the host says: โ€œTell us about yourself,โ€ don't start from scratch.
๐ŸŽฏ Structure:
"I help [who] [do what] using [how]."
๐ŸŽง Example:
โ€œI help high-achieving moms lose weight without dieting, using a blend of mindset coaching and simple habits.โ€
๐Ÿ‘‚ Tip: Record yourself saying it. You'll instantly know if it sounds clunky or smooth.

๐Ÿ“ฃ 4. "PROMOTE ME" BLURB: Help the Host Help You

After the interview, make it easy for the host to promote you.
๐Ÿ“ Template:
โ€œ๐Ÿ”ฅ New episode with guest [Your Name]
[Your one-liner]
In this interview, we cover:
โœ… [Topic 1]
โœ… [Topic 2]
โœ… [What listeners walk away with]
๐ŸŒ Learn more: [Your link]โ€
๐Ÿ“ฆ Bonus: Include a headshot or graphic if you have one.

๐Ÿ”„ 5. PREP YOUR TALKING POINTS

๐ŸŽฏ Before you record, jot down:
Your 1โ€“2 key takeaways
A personal story to support each one
A clear CTA (what do you want the listener to do?)
Optional: A few notes or stats to reference
๐Ÿ›‘ Don't write a script. Do plan ahead.
Great guests don't wing itโ€”they flow with focus.

๐Ÿค BONUS TIPS FOR HOSTS:

๐Ÿ’ฌ If you're hosting:
Share questions or topics in advance
Let your guest know how to pronounce your name + your show
Ask them for a one-liner or bio ahead of time
Remind them what your audience values
After recording: give them a date and a blurb they can share

๐Ÿ’ฌ If you're hosting:
Share questions or topics in advance
Let your guest know how to pronounce your name + your show
Ask them for a one-liner or bio ahead of time
Remind them what your audience values
After recording: give them a date and a blurb they can share
