Steven Langer is redefining what it means to lead, work, and thrive in today’s fast paced world. As the founder and CEO of Well By Design and the author of The Coherence Compass: Finding Wellness in a World Off Course, he is on a mission to help organizations build cultures where well being and performance go hand in hand.
In his conversation on the Pathfinders podcast with host Vijayan Swaminathan, Langer shares a powerful journey shaped by global experiences, personal challenges, and a deep commitment to change. From growing up in St. Albert, Alberta to teaching in London, England, his early career exposed him to contrasting workplace norms and sparked a realization that success does not have to come at the expense of health and balance.
Throughout his leadership roles in education, Langer witnessed firsthand the rising toll of burnout, where overwork became normalized and even celebrated. His time abroad, however, revealed a different model where connection, rest, and community were essential parts of the workday. That contrast became the foundation of his philosophy. Thriving workplaces are built intentionally, not accidentally.
A defining turning point came during the COVID 19 pandemic, when a family crisis and his own health risks forced Langer to reevaluate everything. Choosing courage over comfort, he stepped away from a senior executive role to create Well By Design, an organization dedicated to helping leaders align purpose, people, and performance in sustainable ways.
Today, Steven Langer challenges organizations to move beyond surface level solutions and embrace a deeper cultural shift rooted in human sustainability. His message is clear. When people are supported to be well, they do not just perform better. They flourish.
