After initially pleading not guilty to all charges related to the killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, Luigi Mangione admitted in a courtroom last week that “on the morning of December 4, 2024, I shot Mr. Thompson in Manhattan and he died.” The 28-year-old pleaded guilty to federal stalking charges related to the death of Thompson, who was gunned down in midtown Manhattan on his way to an investors’ meeting. Immediately following Mangione’s guilty plea in federal court, his legal team began trying to get his state case thrown out, citing New York’s double jeopardy law. On Monday, a state judge postponed Mangione’s New York trial indefinitely and gave prosecutors until Oct. 9 to respond to the defense’s motion to dismiss the state charges. Criminal defense attorney Jo-Anna Nieves joins “Forbes True Crime” to discuss the latest developments.
