Content Themes
The podcast focuses on topics relevant to the trucking industry, particularly the education and training of new drivers. Key episodes cover challenges like test anxiety, effective teaching strategies, mentorship importance, and the dynamics of establishing a positive driver culture. Specific examples include discussions about the transition from teacher roles to CDL educators and the curriculum at various training institutions.

Education Station is about “who’s next.” It’s a conversation with trainers, saftey experts, executives, and educational leaders about creating the future employees of the trucking industry. Methodologies of teaching, onboarding new classroom technologies, and, perhaps most importantly, imparting institutional wisdom to a new generation of trucking are all on the lesson plan.
On this edition of Education Station on Road Gang Radio, host Jimmy Mac talks with Scott Hartley, Director of Truck Driver Training at Caldwell Community College & Technical Institute (CCCTI). From humble beginnings with one truck in 1990 to an impressive fleet of 85 pieces of equipment today, CCCTI’s program has trained over 4,000 CDL drivers—and counting.
Scott shares how the program has evolved over 35 years, offering day and evening classes, hands-on behind-the-wheel training, and job placement assistance to help new drivers start their careers strong. They also discuss the lifestyle changes students face as they transition into trucking, and how community partnerships across North Carolina are helping shape the future of driver education.
