After rescuing Israel from slavery, God brings them to Mount Sinai not just to change their location, but to form a relationship with them. Though they are free, they still think like slaves, and when invited to draw near to God, they shrink back in fear. So God provides a way: appointing priests and establishing the tabernacle so His presence can dwell among them. Even the priestly garments show that access to God isn’t something we earn. He lovingly provides what we need to come near.
But this priesthood was always pointing to something greater. Jesus is the true and better High Priest. He is the one who doesn’t need cleansing, who offers Himself once for all, and who fully brings us near to God. Because of Him, we don’t have to stay at a distance. We are invited to step out of fear, draw near, and live in the presence of a God who deeply wants to be with us.
