Description
In this episode, we sit down with Dr. Yang Shao, a Harvard-trained chemist, Fremont City Councilmember for District 4, and candidate for California State Assembly. Dr. Shao’s story is one of unexpected convergences — science and faith, research and public service, personal conviction and political cost — all held together by a deep trust that God calls us to steward our gifts for the good of others.
Yang’s path to faith began not in a church, but in the high-pressure world of a Nobel Prize winner’s lab at Harvard, where he stumbled into a Chinese student Bible study group and experienced what he describes as nothing short of miracles. That encounter transformed how he understood his own work — and eventually drew him out of the lab and into public life altogether. Through smear campaigns and protests outside his home, his anchor has remained daily prayer, a fiercely supportive wife, and one conviction: that good policy is one of the most powerful ways to love your neighbor at scale.
Whether you’re wondering how your faith connects to your work, feeling a pull toward something beyond your comfort zone, or simply looking for an example of what it looks like to lead with integrity in a cynical world, Dr. Yang Shao’s story is one you won’t forget.
