In Equal Ground’s debut episode, we sit down with Kate Uyeda from Campaign Legal Center, Dawn Harrington from Free Hearts, and Steven Adelson from Civic Tennessee to explore the ongoing disenfranchisement of incarcerated individuals.
Although the right to vote was expanded in the 20th century, a surge in disenfranchisement laws has continued to silence millions—disproportionately affecting Black Americans. Despite technological advances that could make voting more accessible for incarcerated individuals, systemic barriers and lack of political will keep many from casting a ballot.
Join us as we unpack the historical roots of this issue, examine how the 14th Amendment can be a tool for justice, and discuss solutions for the Tennessee community where lifetime disenfranchisement continues to suppress our neighbors’ voices.
