In this mini edition of the pod, Em chatted live at Soundbar with Riley Michelle Welsh, a Fort Collins-based artist and musician, about the challenges of being a DIY artist in 2026. As part of Riley's summer residency at Soundbar, we get into the weeds on the opacity and complexity of the music industry (hint: it's not very user friendly). Riley has personally navigated this landscape as a DIY artist, and also brings knowledge learned from courses taken at Colorado State University on copyright, marketing principles and contract law in the music industry. We wanted to have this conversation to inform and empower other DIY artists on potential revenue channels and opportunities to succeed as an artist in an industry that often feels stacked against you. We also discuss perhaps one of the biggest challenges to any artist: how to stay authentic to your art while navigating the capitalist hellscape of it all.
