Most people don't find out about Kayla's Children Centre until they need it. Mira Lax is the director of marketing at KCC, a school, therapy clinic, and camp for children with disabilities and complex medical needs in Thornhill. They support over 450 families a year, from six weeks old to 21, and this summer they are opening Camp Lionheart, the first-ever Jewish overnight camp in Canada designed specifically for kids with disabilities, in Muskoka. She joins us to talk about what it actually looks like to build a place where every child belongs.
We get into what truly accessible really means (it's not just a push door), the full range of kids KCC serves beyond wheelchairs, and how a summer camp can also function as a medical centre. Mira also breaks down the sibling program and what it's like for the seven-year-old in the family who doesn't always get talked about, the caregiver support that goes way beyond dropping a child off, and how to find KCC if you're a family that's overwhelmed and doesn't know where to start. Plus: the nonprofit model behind it all, and what it looks like when the work you do aligns with who you are.
