Live from the Pink Lady – it’s Saturday Night Dive! In this episode of Saturday Night Dive: An SNL Podcast, the Zachs review and break down one of the strangers chapters in Saturday Night Live history – the infamous 1977 “Live from Mardi Gras” special. Originally airing in February 1977, the special features appearances from Randy Newman, Buck Henry, Eric Idle, Penny Marshall, Cindy Williams, Henry Winkler and more. They explore the chaotic live broadcast from Mardi Gras in New Orleans, the sketches and segments that made the special so controversial and why the unusual experiment remains one of the most talked about moments in early SNL history.
This special has it all: President Carter straddling Andrew Jackson, many Randy Newman performances, missing Bacchus parades, Fats Domino covers, Tom Snyder at a topless/bottomless club, Rebecca (back from Mecca), the Mystic Krewe of the Apollo, Moon Landrieu and liver boats. Take the dive!
