Welcome to Resilient Aging // Unfiltered, where Dr. Dani Cabral, brain aging neurologist & psychiatrist, explores the realities of aging through candid conversations, emerging science, and inspiring stories of adaptation. We translate complex research into language that is accessible, practical, and intellectually honest—helping listeners understand what is established, what is promising, and what remains uncertain. Through conversations with experts and individuals living with neurodegenerative disease, we challenge stigma, spark action, and redefine what’s possible with aging.
In this episode, Dr. Dani sits down with Dr. Jeff Iliff, one of the pioneering scientists behind the discovery of the glymphatic system, the brain's waste clearance network that has transformed our understanding of brain health, sleep, and neurodegenerative diseases.
Dr. Jeff Iliff is the Associate Director for Research at the VA Puget Sound Health Care System's Northwest Mental Illness, Research, Education and Clinical Center (MIRECC) and the Arthur J. and Marcella McCaffray Professor in Alzheimer's Disease at the University of Washington School of Medicine.
Together, they explore how the brain removes harmful proteins, why quality sleep is essential for this process, and what happens when this system becomes impaired. The conversation also dives into groundbreaking MRI techniques that allow researchers to study brain clearance in humans, the long-term effects of traumatic brain injury (TBI), and how these discoveries may lead to earlier detection and future treatments for Alzheimer's disease and other neurological disorders.
This episode is a mind-blowing look at one of the most exciting developments in modern brain research.
