Matthew Shipp is most often associated with the Free, or Avant Garde Jazz scene of the early 90's in New York City. After gaining attention from his stint with William Parker in the David S. Ware Quartet, he embarked upon a prolific recording and performing career with many of the greats from this genre and other styles of music, which continues to the present day. He is recognized as a complete stylistic innovator on the piano and has an instsntly recognizable sound and musical language.
