Adelaide’s Story Lives On
As Paul reminds us in the old saw about a soldier, “He will die twice: once on the battlefield and a second time when his name is no longer spoken.” It’s a concept he’s kept front of mind when researching and sharing stories of his ancestors. When his focus on family stories wavered, he turned to iconic photographs as inspiration. It started with “Toffs and Toughs,” a historic image of boys from two social classes, taken in 1937 outside Lord’s Cricket Ground in England.
This is a perfect storytelling photograph and inspired a not-yet-captured tale for Paul. Meanwhile, it set him on a journey to explore the historic details behind iconic photos such as:
* The Boy Behind The Picture, the story of the little newsboy on the day after the Titanic sank:
* Finally, Adelaide’s story. This is the original post on his Chiddicks Family Tree site that went viral with the story of Adelaide Springett in a staged photograph taken by Horace Warner, a Quaker Minister working in London to raise money for the destitute waifs on the street.
Paul expanded on Adelaide’s story well after his initial post with more detail in his publication here on Substack:
