James Janeiro, Director of Policy and Government Relations at the Canadian Centre for Caregiving Excellence, joins host Jeff Sammut to discuss the organization’s 2026 Caring in Canada report, which reveals how the country’s affordability crisis is placing growing strain on Canada’s more than eight million caregivers. The conversation explores how many caregivers are being forced to remain in the workforce well into what should be their retirement years just to stay financially afloat. James discusses how years of political inaction have pushed caregivers to their limits, why access to home care and respite services must improve — especially for seniors and people in rural communities — and whether caregiving will become a larger issue in upcoming elections. He also highlights the urgent need for free counselling and mental health supports, the importance of supporting frontline care workers themselves, and why caregiving must be recognized as a major social and economic issue requiring coordinated public policy action across Canada.
