Filmmakers and creatives talking about the stories that matter to us – starting with Palestine…We believe in social impact, humanism, and hope.
Francesca Albanese, the United Nations Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in the Palestinian territory, joins Shamim and Hanan on Episode 82 of The Enlightenment Podcast for a powerful conversation about Gaza, genocide, international law, corporate complicity, and the struggle for justice in Palestine.
Since her appointment in May 2022, Albanese has documented human rights violations in the occupied Palestinian territory through her work as a UN Special Rapporteur. Her report Anatomy of a Genocide, published in March 2024, examined the legal framework surrounding genocide in Gaza. In her later report, From Economy of Occupation to Economy of Genocide, she named 48 companies that she says are profiting from or facilitating Israel’s occupation and actions in the Palestinian territory.
In this episode, Francesca explains what she witnessed during her years working with UNRWA and why her understanding of Palestine changed after seeing the realities of occupation on the ground. She discusses international law, the legal definition of genocide, apartheid, colonisation, Palestinian refugees, and why she believes the violence against Palestinians cannot be understood without its historical and political context.
Watch the full conversation and hear Francesca Albanese explain Palestine through the lens of international law, human rights and the lived experiences of Palestinians.
