“HERE'S TO THE CRAZY ONES. THE MISFITS. THE REBELS. THE TROUBLEMAKERS. THE ROUND PEGS IN THE SQUARE HOLES. THE ONES WHO SEE THINGS DIFFERENTLY. THEY'RE NOT FOND OF RULES. AND THEY HAVE NO RESPECT FOR THE STATUS QUO. YOU CAN QUOTE THEM, DISAGREE WITH THEM, GLORIFY OR VILIFY THEM. ABOUT THE ONLY THING YOU CAN'T DO IS IGNORE THEM. BECAUSE THEY CHANGE THINGS. THEY PUSH THE HUMAN RACE FORWARD. AND WHILE SOME MAY SEE THEM AS THE CRAZY ONES, WE SEE GENIUS. BECAUSE THE PEOPLE WHO ARE CRAZY ENOUGH TO THINK THEY CAN CHANGE THE WORLD, ARE THE ONES WHO DO.”

here are stories that remind us who we are — and then there are stories that ask us to remember what we’ve forgotten.
Today, we sit with Val, a German-born conservationist whose life took an unexpected and profound turn when he left behind modern comforts for the raw, untamed beauty of the Botswanan bush. There, alongside his partner, he co-founded the Modisa Wildlife Project — not just to protect wildlife, but to restore balance, reverence, and relationship between humans and the land we share.
At the heart of Val’s story is Serga — a lioness orphaned as a cub, raised not in captivity, but in connection. What began as an act of survival became something sacred: a bond that defied language, hierarchy, and fear. Through Serga, Val came to understand the emotional intelligence of lions, the quiet wisdom of nature, and the deep healing that unfolds when we choose to truly listen.
But this conversation is not simply about a man and a lioness. It’s about the spiritual and ecological crisis we face as a species — our disconnection from the natural world, and the consequences of treating wildness as something “other.” Val speaks to the complexity of conservation: the heartbreak of habitat loss, the frustration of corruption, and the urgency of educating communities to protect the ecosystems that sustain them.
He offers no easy answers. Instead, he offers something much more important — a call to presence, to humility, to rewilding not just landscapes, but the inner terrain of the human heart.
This episode is a meditation on belonging, on sacred bonds that exist beyond species, and on what it truly means to protect. To honor the wild is not just to save it — it is to remember that we are it.
