As Nigeria celebrates Independence Day, we remember a Nigerian whose story became part of Britain’s own history.
David Oluwale was a Nigerian man who came to Britain in the 1960s and made Leeds his home. His life, struggles, and tragic death expose a difficult chapter in the history of Black people in Britain, particularly the experiences of African and Caribbean migrants navigating racism, poverty, policing and belonging.
In this special Independence Day episode of The Nigerian Abroad, we remember David Oluwale, explore what happened to him, and ask a bigger question:
How much do we really know about the Nigerians and other Black people who helped shape Britain?
Black British history is often presented through the stories of people from the Caribbean, while the experiences and contributions of Africans in Britain can receive far less attention. David’s story is an important reminder that Nigerian history abroad is also British history.
This episode is not simply about remembering one man. It is about remembering a part of our history that deserves to be known.
