What if birth didn’t have to feel like something you just survived?
For so many women, birth is presented as something to fear, something to manage, or something to hand over to everyone else in the room. You’re told to make a plan, but also to be ready for that plan to be dismissed. You’re told your preferences matter, but in the same breath, you hear that all that really matters is a healthy mom and a healthy baby.
And of course, we want a healthy mom and a healthy baby. Always. But that should be the starting point. Women deserve to feel safe, respected, informed, and supported while they bring their babies into the world.
In this conversation, I’m joined by Courtney McMillan, a certified nurse-midwife, founder of Camina Wellness and Midwifery, and a dear friend who has spent more than 20 years protecting the sacredness of birth. Courtney has seen birth from so many sides: as a nurse, a midwife, a mother, and someone who believes deeply in the power of women being cared for as whole human beings during pregnancy, labor, and postpartum.
What I love about this conversation is how it brings birth back to the woman. Her body. Her intuition. Her questions. Her values. Her fears. Her hopes. Her right to understand what is happening and why.
Because preparation for birth goes far beyond packing a hospital bag or writing preferences on a piece of paper. Real preparation means knowing your options. It means understanding your body. It means having people around you who can explain decisions without pressure, pause when something feels rushed, and help you feel like an active participant in your own birth.
That doesn’t mean everything will go perfectly. Birth is still birth. Plans can change, decisions can shift, and sometimes medical care becomes necessary. But even when birth changes direction, respect should stay in the room. Communication should stay in the room. Your voice should stay in the room.
So many women carry stories from birth that were shaped by feeling rushed, unheard, dismissed, or afraid. And those moments stay with you. The way you are spoken to in labor matters. The way your questions are answered matters. The way your body is treated matters. The way your baby enters the world matters.
This episode is for the woman who wants to feel more prepared for birth, but also more protected in it. It’s for the woman who wants to understand the difference between fear-based care and trust-based care. It’s for the woman who wants to know that she can ask questions, make decisions, and still be deeply supported.
Birth is powerful and you deserve care that remembers that.
