In today’s episode, I’m chatting with Lily Hawkes, Marine Engagement Assistant at the Community of Arran Seabed Trust.
Sharing our name and a deep love for the sea, Lily and I met for the first time in April when she moved to Arran to work as a seasonal Marine Engagement Assistant at the Community of Arran Seabed Trust. From cuttlefish and kelp forests to maerl beds and marine protected areas, Lily’s fascination for the underwater world is evident from the moment you enter the Discovery Centre. Brimming with interesting facts and an innate drive to advocate for change, in this episode Lily reflects on her desire to keep learning about our seas and the role of nostalgia in keeping our ocean connection alive.
Something Old: Swimming in pools as a child, falling in love with water sports
Something New: Grassroots movement placing concrete blocks underwater to protect seagrass from trawling in Tuscany, Italy
Something Borrowed: Noticing the tiny details of the seabed – colours and magic of the underwater kelp forests in South Africa
Something Blue: Treyarnon Bay, North Cornwall

The hope with this podcast is to bring a tiny dose of blue wherever in the world you’re listening…to remind ourselves as a global community of ocean lovers that there is hope for the future of our waterways.
Sending you all the ocean love,
Lily xx
