In this episode of No Brain Behind, hosts Dr. Angel Cadena-Tejada and Dr. Rachel Forman speak with Dr. George Howard and Dr. Suzanne Judd about their leadership of the REGARDS (Reasons for Geographic and Racial Differences in Stroke) study, one of the largest longitudinal investigations of stroke disparities in the United States. They discuss how the study was designed to examine persistent racial and geographic disparities in stroke, particularly the higher stroke mortality among African Americans and the elevated burden of stroke in the southeastern “Stroke Belt.” Launched in the early 2000s, REGARDS was developed to address critical gaps in stroke epidemiology and to better understand population-level drivers of cerebrovascular disease. The conversation also explores the practical challenges of building and sustaining a nationwide cohort, including recruiting participants through cold outreach, addressing distrust in research, and maintaining long-term engagement with participants over more than two decades. The guests further describe how the REGARDS dataset has evolved into a major shared scientific resource, supporting hundreds of publications and collaborations focused on stroke risk, social determinants of health, and disparities in brain and cardiovascular health.
