Rehab Remix – Managing Provider and Payer Perspectives with Stephen Kinsley
In this episode of #RehabRemix: Reimagining Boundaries, my discussion is with someone who has deep experience on both the provider and payer side of healthcare, and definitely the first in our series to address the Payer perspective. Stephen Kinsley, now with Ivy Rehab as their Head of Payer Strategy, spent many years in various leadership roles at SCA Health, a major arm of Optum Health in recent years.
Stephen’s energy and passion around everything he does is contagious. His unique experience with knowledge of both provider and payer, make him a valuable asset to our industry as we try to balance our approaches towards accountable patient-centered care. Stephen explains how payer-provider relationships have evolved from transactional contracting to deeper dialogue focused on value, and outlines nuances across the segments.
As Stephen so simply puts it – it’s all about the patient. In his words, “it comes down to the patient’s journey and his or her care, and I think sometimes we let other things get in the way of that.” By prioritizing the patient’s journey, we can better control healthcare spending while ensuring patients remain engaged on their healing journeys. “We all want the same thing!”
Stephen has a great way of categorizing us as patients; “you got your seniors, you got your everyday workforce, and the individuals that are unfortunate to get injured on the job”. Which then led us to discussing the role of PT in Workers’ Compensation, a great segment to realize near-term value by leveraging data-driven care.
