When I was young, my parents taught me a great work ethic and I delivered papers, delivered fruit, mowed lawns, bailed hay, pumped gas, etc. After college, I found myself fascinated by investment books. I saw the possibility of real estate investment as a way to become independent. I finally worked up the courage to jump careers. I started small brokering duplexes and worked up to building 32 units. I got my first investment designation the CCIM, Certified Commercial Investment Member, and learned much more investment theory. I became the go to guy for people who wanted to put money into real estate investments. I taught continuing education for realtors and learned all about the fabulous tax savings that real estate afforded.
By the early 1980’s I had the idea that rather than paying 16% at the bank to develop a building, why not just buy the bonds and earn the 16% myself. Much simpler. So I started buying bonds. As a result I started working with many retired people and learning the unique needs of people who no longer got a paycheck. Financial planning was just starting, and I became a CFP, Certified Financial Planner. I taught classes and mentored other aspiring CFP’s as well as continuing education for bank managers, CPA’s and attorneys. I also became an Enrolled Agent so that I was able to represent tax payors before the IRS. I felt the need to learn how to analyze the balance sheets and navigate the treacherous grounds of accrual accounting, so I became a CFA, Chartered Financial Analyst. Although I’ve earned many credentials and designations, now all that I maintain is the CTS, the Certified Tax Specialist.
I now bring together the world class team of specialists to solve client’s issues, most frequently how to save significant amounts of income, capital gains and estate taxes. And probably biggest of all, the massive built-in tax on retirement accounts.
If I could summarize all of this into one lesson, it is that when people retire, they need to do is make the change from accumulation to distribution and prioritize income and preservation before growth.
In my rare spare time, I like hanging around with my family and rescue dog Molly.
