Israel made the mistake of thinking that taking the Ark of God into battle would save them. However, God not only did not deliver them but caused them to suffer defeat at the hands of their enemies. Many rely on superstitions and good luck charms for power and victory. Although the Ark belonged to God, there was no saving power within it. At the same time, disrespect shown towards the Ark, the church building, or anything else dedicated to God carries consequences. Just as God protected and honored things in days gone by, He still expects us to have respect for things of the New Testament such as communion and baptism.
