Welcome Back!!!
KC chats with Rudene Haynes, the managing partner of the Richmond office of Hunton Andrews Kurth, an international law firm founded in Richmond in 1901. Rudene shares her inspiring journey from growing up in a single-parent household in Jacksonville, Florida, to becoming a trailblazer in the legal community as the first female managing partner of her firm’s Richmond office. Her story highlights the importance of education, mentorship, community engagement, and aligning one’s career with personal values.
Rudene’s path was unconventional and driven by a mix of discipline, faith, and openness to opportunities. Encouraged by her mother to focus on academics, she excelled at Stanton College Preparatory School and later earned a scholarship to the University of Virginia (UVA), where a visit as an eighth-grader shaped her dream to attend. At UVA, she majored in math and minored in Spanish, studying abroad in Spain, where she decided to pursue law. She then attended the University of Texas for law school, drawn there by a full scholarship, but always intended to return to the Southeast.
Her first summer internship with Hunton solidified her choice to join the firm permanently. Throughout her career, she was guided by mentors who advised her to choose community and civic activities that resonated with her passions and to focus first on mastering her craft. Rudine emphasizes the value of becoming an expert in one’s field as the foundation for broader influence and leadership opportunities.
Rudene also candidly shares her breast cancer diagnosis during the pandemic and how the experience brought clarity, resilience, and renewed commitment to her work and community. She stresses the power of mentorship and sponsorship, encouraging leaders to expand their networks beyond those who mirror their backgrounds to foster diversity and growth. Rudene advocates for openness and reciprocity in these relationships, highlighting how mentorship can be enriching for both mentor and mentee.
The episode closes with Rudene recommending future guests who inspire her in the Richmond community, particularly leaders in health and children’s advocacy. The conversation underscores the themes of following one’s energy and values, embracing community, and being open to unexpected paths and relationships.
