An unexpected wolf on a dairy farm leads the episode, along with a new associate degree aimed at strengthening the dairy technology workforce, a look at a day in the life of a Minnesota dairy farm family and insights into this year's crop and what it could mean for dairy nutrition.
We begin with Nathan Kling, who found wolf tracks throughout the sand surround an area where one of his cows was recovering. Teeth and bite marks provided evidence of what caused the cows untimely death. Then we hear from Londa Nwadike of South Dakota State University about a new associate degree being offered this fall. While students have been able to complete 2-year technical degrees in related fields such as automation, there has not been a dedicated 2-year program focused specifically on dairy production or dairy processing. That is, until now. Next, we hear from a Minnesota dairy farming family. Each day three generations of the Rausch and Crosby family step foot into the barn for chores. Ann Crosby, and her two sons Cody and Chase, and her dad Tom Rausch, milk 60 cows at the family farm, Oak Grove Dairy, near Randall. Today's final conversation is with Barry Visser, a nutritionist and consistent contributor to the Dairy Star. We talk with him about this year's corn crop, including how weather patterns have affected crop growth and disease exposure.
