On today’s episode of the Trout Wrangler Podcast, I sit down with world-renowned photographer, filmmaker, explorer, author, and storyteller Chris Burkard.

Chris has built a career around traveling to some of the wildest and most remote places on Earth and finding ways to tell the stories of the people, landscapes, and adventures he encounters along the way. From surfing and fishing to cycling and exploring places most of us only dream about visiting, his work has always been rooted in a connection to the outdoors.

We dive into Chris’s journey as a self-taught photographer and how he developed a style that became instantly recognizable throughout the outdoor world. We talk about storytelling through a camera, finding your own creative voice, and why sometimes the environment surrounding an adventure can be just as important as the person or activity you’re photographing.

Of course, we get into Iceland, a place that has played a massive role in Chris’s career and life. After years of traveling there for photography, surfing, cycling, and other adventures, Chris and his family eventually made Reykjavík home.

We also talk about fishing and the way being on the water creates opportunities to experience wild places differently. Chris’s body of work has taken him everywhere from Alaska and Iceland to Patagonia, Russia, Norway, New Zealand, and countless destinations in between.

Throughout the conversation, we get into photography, filmmaking, creativity, adventure, conservation, and what continues to motivate Chris to seek out places that aren’t always easy or comfortable to reach.

Chris has worked with names including Patagonia, The North Face, Apple, National Geographic, YETI, Orvis, Toyota, Sony and many more, while also publishing numerous books and creating films including Under an Arctic Sky.

More than anything, this conversation is about the experiences that happen when you get outside, take a chance, and go looking for something beyond the familiar.
