What if the chronic pain you have been managing, medicating, and stretching your way through for years is not actually a structural problem — and what if the three layers that are silently driving it have nothing to do with anything your doctor has ever ordered a test for or offered you a solution to? In this episode, Shannon sits down with Lauren Oliver, certified yoga therapist and integrative health coach, to talk about why chronic pain is so much more complex than most people are told, why the standard medical approach consistently misses the most important pieces, and what it actually looks like to heal from the inside out when you have been suffering for a long time.
Lauren shares:
- Her own deeply personal story — born with a congenital heart defect, gallbladder removed at age 7, 15 years of severe menstrual pain dismissed and gaslit by medical professionals before finally being diagnosed with endometriosis and adenomyosis, and how a lifetime of navigating a body that hurt became the foundation of everything she now does with clients
- The 3 hidden root causes of chronic pain that most doctors never check — systemic inflammation including insulin resistance and metabolic dysfunction, nervous system dysregulation rooted in stress and trauma, and dysfunctional breathing patterns that keep the body locked in a constant low-grade stress response it can never fully recover from
- Why the level of disease on an MRI or ultrasound does not translate to the level of pain a person experiences, and what that tells us about the nervous system’s role in amplifying and sustaining pain signals that have nothing to do with structural damage
- The pain-fear cycle that keeps people stuck — how the thought spirals, the stories, and the emotional responses layered on top of physical pain are neuroscientifically making those pain signals louder and last longer, and how somatic pain reprocessing therapy interrupts that cycle at the root
- Why most people are breathing completely wrong and do not know it — what reverse breathing is, why it keeps the body locked in sympathetic dominance, and how learning to breathe with the diaphragm properly is one of the most foundational and underused tools for chronic pain relief and nervous system regulation
- How insulin resistance is one of the most overlooked drivers of chronic pain and inflammation — and how something as seemingly unrelated as elevated blood sugar can be the hidden reason a frozen shoulder, endometriosis flare, or persistent lower back pain will not respond to stretching, supplements, or any other treatment
- The 5 koshas framework from yoga philosophy — the physical body, energetic body, conscious mind, wisdom body, and bliss body — and why true healing requires addressing all five layers simultaneously rather than just treating the symptom that is loudest
Tune in for a genuinely eye-opening, deeply compassionate, and refreshingly practical conversation about what it means to stop chasing pain relief and start understanding the full picture of what your body is actually trying to tell you.
