What does it take to build a company capable of scaling from a handful of farmhands to more than 1,100 employees working on some of the largest projects in the country?
In this episode of the Legacy Builders with Kyle McGee Podcast, Kyle McGee sits down with Thomas Harker, President of BZI, to talk about the culture, leadership, innovation, and long-term thinking behind BZI’s remarkable growth.
Thomas shares how BZI evolved from a small construction company founded in 2006 into a major player in the steel construction industry—and why, despite that growth, he believes BZI isn't really in the steel business. It's in the people business.
They dive into BZI’s philosophy of putting culture before growth and the company’s willingness to make significant investments in its people. New team members are flown to Utah for two weeks of paid training before ever stepping onto a job site, representing an investment of nearly $10,000 per person. For Thomas, the question isn’t simply, “What if they leave?” It’s also: ”What becomes possible if they stay?”
Kyle and Thomas also discuss one of the hardest transitions for any entrepreneur: realizing that being indispensable can actually make you the bottleneck.
Thomas explains how he went from being the project manager, superintendent, foreman, equipment operator, and problem solver to intentionally building systems and developing leaders who could replace him. Today, that philosophy extends throughout BZI, where leaders are challenged to “replace themselves twice.”
Throughout the conversation, Thomas returns to one central idea: play the long game.
Build people. Build trust. Take action. Solve problems. Invest for decades instead of optimizing only for the next project. And remember that what you become along the way may ultimately matter more than what you build.
