In this installment of the Portus Perspectives series, William opens with a reference to Benjamin Graham, widely regarded as the father of value investing and the man who mentored Warren Buffett and a generation of wildly successful investors in the forties, fifties, and sixties.
Graham had a story he told about a fictional business partner he called Mr. Market. The premise is simple but the implications are profound.
Imagine you own a business with a partner named Mr. Market. Every day, Mr. Market shows up and either offers to buy your shares or offers to sell you his. The catch is that Mr. Market is manic depressive. Some days he is wildly pessimistic. The world is ending, the business is worthless, everything is coming apart. On those days he offers to sell you his shares at a rock bottom price. Other days he is wildly optimistic. Business is booming, the future is limitless, nothing can stop us. On those days he offers to buy your shares at an extraordinary premium.
The astute investor knows that neither extreme reflects reality. And that both extremes represent an opportunity.
William connects this directly to the experience of business owners who are preparing to sell. Right now, as a private business owner, you do not get a daily quote on what your business is worth. There is no Mr. Market showing up at your door every morning with an offer. Your wealth sits in the business, largely insulated from the daily swings of market sentiment.
The minute you sell, that changes entirely.
He uses SpaceX as a current example. IPO'd at $135, ran to over $210 in the first few days on pure optimism, and has since settled back down around $105. Someone paid $210 for shares that are now worth $105. That is Mr. Market in action. Wildly optimistic one moment, sobering the next.
For business owners who have spent years with no daily offers to buy what they own, the transition to having liquid wealth subject to Mr. Market's daily mood swings is one of the most important and underappreciated shifts that comes with selling. Understanding who Mr. Market is and how he operates is essential preparation for that moment.
Key Topics Covered:
- Benjamin Graham and Mr. Market: The story behind one of the most important concepts in investing.
- The Manic Depressive Business Partner: Why Mr. Market's extreme swings create opportunity for the disciplined investor.
- The Business Owner's Advantage: Why private business owners are largely insulated from Mr. Market's daily mood.
- The SpaceX Example: What a recent IPO illustrates about market optimism and what follows it.
- The Script Flip: Why selling your business changes your relationship with Mr. Market forever.
- Preparing for the Transition: What business owners need to understand before their wealth becomes liquid.
If you're thinking about selling your business and have never had to think about daily market swings before, this episode will prepare you for one of the most important transitions you will ever make.
