Is the question of women in church leadership settled by one passage — or does the whole sweep of scripture have something to say?
In Part 1 of this Café Theology series, the conversation begins not with the controversial passages in 1 Timothy or 1 Corinthians, but right at the very beginning. Genesis 1 and 2. And what you find there might be more surprising than you expect.
Working through the whole arc of scripture from Eden to Romans 16, this session builds a careful, honest, cumulative case for what's often called the egalitarian — or mutualist — position: that all roles of leadership and ministry in the church are open to men and women equally. But this isn't a one-sided lecture. The complementarian position is treated with genuine respect, the stronger and weaker arguments on both sides are named honestly, and the really hard passages — 1 Timothy 2, 1 Corinthians 11 and 14 — are saved for Part 2, because they deserve proper attention.
Along the way, you'll encounter some remarkable figures: Deborah, who led a nation without a word of apology in the text. Huldah, who was chosen to interpret the rediscovered book of the Law over the available Jeremiah. Priscilla, whose name appears first four out of six times she's mentioned — and who corrected Apollos' theology. Phoebe, who in all likelihood was the first person to preach the book of Romans to the church in Rome. And Junia, described by Paul as outstanding among the apostles — a detail that caused such discomfort it was quietly edited out for centuries.
This is also a session about how to read the Bible well — understanding the difference between what's descriptive and what's prescriptive, taking seriously the world of the writer and the original audience, and grappling with what it means that what we see in Genesis 1 and 2 is the blueprint the church is supposed to be building towards.
Whether you're convinced, unconvinced, or genuinely unsure — you're welcome at this table. Come and think it through.
