Have you and your partner ever walked away from the same hard moment with your teen or young adult and found that you disagreed completely about what should have happened? One of you wants to hold the line. The other has lived the day and knows exactly how that line is going to land. Both of you are trying to help. Somehow the argument ends up being with each other.
In this episode, Dr. Ed Callahan, founder of Neurodiversity University, sits down with Amy J. for a shorter, candid conversation about what parenting a neurodivergent teen or young adult does to a marriage. They talk about auto-programming—the way each of us reverts to the parenting we received when the stress gets high enough—and why two people raised in two different households will pull in two different directions at exactly the moment they most need to pull together. Amy shares the split that nearly wore her family down: the parent who is there for every meltdown drifts toward nurturing, the parent watching from a distance asks why you did not simply tell or make him to do it, and neither one feels understood.
Dr. Callahan then walks through what actually closes that gap. It is not a communication trick. It is a two-step process—first building a real understanding of what neurodivergence is, then narrowing it down to how it shows up in your particular child—so that both parents are working from the same picture. When that happens, a teen’s behavior stops reading as disrespect and starts reading as a difference in processing, and problem-solving becomes a project the family works on together rather than parents against child. As Dr. Callahan puts it, the goal is not to survive this stretch. It is to still be close enough to be invited to the wedding and to meet the grandchildren—with your marriage still intact.
