Back to school- The 3 week crash reset every child NEEDS this school year:
In this episode, I’m breaking down why that “week three crash” is so predictable… and what you can start doing before school begins so you’re not scrambling once everyone is exhausted.
Build the foundation before school starts
You don’t build resilience the night before the first day of school.
I like to start about two weeks ahead with a simple daily foundation:
- VMG+ for vitamins, minerals, and micronutrients
- Chewable Omegas for brain and cell support
- PB Restore or PB Assist for gut support
- On Guard Beadlets or Softgels for immune support
The goal is not to wait until the sniffles show up. It’s to support the body before the new schedule, disrupted sleep, stress, and classroom exposure begin.
Reset the morning before forcing bedtime
If your kids have been staying up late and sleeping in all summer, don’t suddenly put them to bed two hours earlier and expect them to fall asleep.
Start by gradually moving their wake time earlier and getting bright light into their eyes first thing in the morning.
Their bedtime can begin shifting naturally as their body clock adjusts.
It also helps to rehearse the school morning a few days ahead:
- wake up at the school-day time
- eat breakfast
- find the backpacks
- organize supplements
- work out any friction before the first day
Why week one can be misleading:
The first week often feels surprisingly easy.
New teachers, new clothes, new friends, and adrenaline carry everyone through. But underneath that excitement, sleep debt, sensory overload, and germ exposure can be building.
By week three, things shift.
That is often when we see the after-school meltdowns, low energy, scratchy throats, emotional overload, and kids who seem completely fine at school but fall apart the second they get into the car.
They are not giving you a hard time because you are doing something wrong.
You are the safe person, so their nervous system finally lets go.
After-school emotional support
A few tools I like to have ready are:
- Balance
- Adaptiv
- Wild Orange
- Peppermint
- a diffuser running when they get home
- a protein-rich snack
Scent connects quickly with the emotional centers of the brain, which is why a familiar calming aroma can help the body begin to settle before you have even talked through the entire day.
And please do not underestimate the protein snack.
A tired, overstimulated child plus a blood sugar crash is not exactly a recipe for a peaceful evening.
Support for kids in sports
Children going straight from school into practices or games have long days with very little recovery time.
For a simple sports bag, I like:
- Deep Blue Rub or Stick
- Peppermint
- Wild Orange
- PastTense Stick
- Breathe Stick
- Lavender
- Frankincense
- Correct-X
- a few Band-Aids
These give them simple tools for tired muscles, bumps, bruises, head tension, and that afternoon slump.
Always check your school and team rules before sending products with your child.
When the first sniffle shows up:
By week three, that first scratchy throat or stuffy nose can feel inevitable.
Some of the tools I like to have ready include:
- On Guard Beadlets or Softgels
- Breathe products
- DDR Prime Softgels
- Oregano, Thyme, or On Guard diluted on the feet
- Lavender, On Guard, or Breathe in the diffuser at night
- Deep Blue, PastTense, or Peppermint for head tension
- plenty of water and consistent sleep
The goal is to support the body early instead of waiting until the whole house is struggling.
The “Backpack Pharmacy”
Depending on what your school allows, a simple backpack kit might include:
- On Guard Hand Sanitizing Mist
- a Balance or Adaptiv roller
- Wild Orange and Peppermint
- Correct-X
- Band-Aids
- PastTense or Deep Blue Stick
- ClaryCalm or a Ginger roller for teen girls
Rollers and sticks are especially helpful because they are simple, mess-free, and easy for older children to use independently.
Jen’s Week Three Power Roller
This is the roller I want made before week three arrives:
- 10 drops Frankincense
- 15 drops Lemon
- 15 drops Oregano
- 15 drops Tea Tree
- 15 drops On Guard
- Fractionated coconut oil
- 10 ml roller bottle
Add the essential oils to the roller bottle, then fill the rest with fractionated coconut oil.
I like to apply it to the bottoms of the feet, along the spine, behind the ears, or around the throat area as needed.
For younger or more sensitive children, dilute it further. If an oil ever feels too warm on the skin, apply more fractionated coconut oil or another fatty carrier oil; not water.
When week three arrives, you will not be blindsided. You’ll have the foundations in place, the routines established, and a few simple tools ready to support your family through the transition.
Because prepared feels a whole lot better than panicked.
