Welcome back to the Art and Alchemy Lab. In this interview, I’m joined by Toronto illustrator Jillian (Ailsa) Thalman. Inspired by book ornamentation, folk art and iconography, Jillian puts a playful spin on classic themes, especially anything touching myth, nature or magic. We talk about creative reinvention, the alchemy of making art, and why it’s never too late to begin anew. We also discuss the ancient motto or incantation: Solve et Coagula, which. means to dissolve and bring together. As many times as necessary. Sounds like the creative process itself, doesn’t it?

Jillian has a brand new children’s book out, called The Graveyard Cat. We talk about it a little in the episode, but at that point it was yet to be published. As you know I’m a huge proponent of honesty around emotions and the gentle acceptance of our shadows, both personal and societal. This book is a charming and curious introduction to the various shades of grief for children of all ages. Jillian’s artwork brings the child out in me because it has that timeless vintage illustration quality that I treasure from my own story-time memories.
