What would make someone walk away from neuroscience to become a stuntwoman?
Alleya Bourne went from studying the human brain at the University of Alberta to performing stunts on HBO's The Last of Us and landing a major villain role in the Malayalam film Aadu 3. It's an unconventional career change that took her from a research lab in Edmonton to film sets around the world.
After losing her mother, Alleya began questioning the direction of her life and what she wanted to do with the time she had. She shares how gymnastics, martial arts and parkour led her into stunt training, why she eventually left neuroscience behind, and what it took to rebuild her identity around an entirely different career.
We get into her experience performing as a Clicker on The Last of Us, discovering acting after beginning her stunt career, and landing a major role in Aadu 3 without a traditional audition. Alleya takes us behind the scenes of filming in India, learning Malayalam, developing two villainous characters, and navigating fight scenes where full-contact kicks were sometimes expected.
Beyond the action, we explore how her neuroscience background influences her understanding of fear, visualization and performance. We also talk about overcoming injuries and mental blocks, trusting your creative instincts, stoic philosophy, and why you don't need to have your entire future figured out before taking a chance on something new.
