Ever had home insurance make you “whole” again after a storm, then realize health insurance has zero intention of doing the same?
In this episode, Dr. Kevin Wall sits down with Dr. Derek Price to pull back the curtain on a modern reality most people don’t have words for: being “functionally uninsured.” You may pay your premium every month… but with sky-high deductibles, rising copays, prior authorizations, and denied approvals, you still can’t afford to actually use your coverage when you need care.
Dr. Price shares his personal journey, from Big 10 football to the Detroit Lions, a life-altering neck injury, and the spine surgeon’s blunt wake-up call that sent him into chiropractic. Together, he and Dr. Wall break down how the insurance model shifted from “make you whole” healthcare to “manage risk” disease coverage and why patients and providers are both getting squeezed.
Guest Bio:
Dr. Derek Price is a chiropractor and healthcare executive with a rare, wide-angle view of the modern medical system. Before entering healthcare, he played Big 10 football at the University of Iowa and later signed with the Detroit Lions. A serious neck injury and a spine surgeon’s blunt insight changed the trajectory of his life—leading him into chiropractic and a career spanning multiple corners of healthcare, including physical therapy, orthopedics, pain management, family practice, and behavioral health leadership. Today, Dr. Price is passionate about exposing the “functionally uninsured” reality impacting everyday families—and helping patients understand how to access care without letting insurance dictate their outcomes.
