Podcast Insights
Content Themes
The podcast explores themes like athlete burnout, performance pressure, and life after sports, with episodes that include discussions on the mental health stigma in basketball culture, featuring stories from NBA players like Kevin Love and DeMar DeRozan alongside expert insights on coping strategies and mental well-being.

Hoops and Headspace isn’t just a basketball podcast. It’s a space where we focus on the mental, emotional, and personal parts of being an athlete, a coach, a parent, and a mentor.
We started this podcast because we saw how often athletes are told to just be tough and push through everything without ever learning how to take care of their mental health. We wanted to help break that stigma. Through honest conversations, storytelling, and real-life experiences, we talk about things like pressure, burnout, confidence, identity, recovery, discipline, and what life looks like beyond the game.
What makes Hoops and Headspace different is that we don’t just talk about winning. We talk about wellness, balance, mindset, nutrition, rest, and the habits that help athletes grow as people, not just players. We bring on guests like athletes, coaches, and mentors who are willing to be real and share their journeys. The good and the hard parts.
In this episode of Hoops and Headspace, host Jada Rich and co-host Tae Gray sit down with Rico McDonald, Head Football Coach at Ripley High School, for a powerful conversation about mental health, football, failure, parenting, and personal development.
Coach McDonald shares his journey from player to coach and reflects on how football helped shape him into the man, leader, and father he is today. He breaks down the mental challenges athletes face — from pressure and expectations to fear of failure — and explains why character is revealed during adversity, not success.
This episode goes far beyond the game. Coach McDonald speaks candidly about the importance of visualization, preparation, and resilience, and why coaches must prioritize relationships over results. He emphasizes that football is a tool — not the destination — and that the real mission is teaching life lessons that players can carry long after the cleats come off.
The conversation also dives deep into parenting in sports, highlighting how parents can better support their children’s mental health without placing unnecessary pressure on them. Coach McDonald shares his perspective as both a coach and a father, stressing patience, understanding, and allowing kids the space to grow through their own experiences.
At its core, this episode is about community impact, mentorship, and preparing young people for life, not just Friday nights. Whether you’re a coach, parent, athlete, or mentor, this conversation offers wisdom, encouragement, and practical insight on how to lead young athletes with purpose.
