In this powerful and deeply personal conversation, Deputy Chief Michele Fitzsimmons of the FDNY sits down with host Stacey Ray to reflect on her groundbreaking career as the first woman to reach the rank of Deputy Chief in fire operations.
From growing up in a legacy firefighter family to navigating the cultural resistance women faced entering the fire service, Michele shares what it took to rise through the ranks in a historically male-dominated field. The episode also explores the emotional and physical toll of the job—from the adrenaline of firefighting to the long-term impact of 9/11 on first responders. Michele speaks candidly about leadership, resilience, and the responsibility she feels to pave the way for future generations.
