Providing continual knowledge, deep insights, wisdom and resources to help create safe, affordable, long-term homes for everyone in Aotearoa New Zealand.
In this episode, we talk with the group behind Porirua’s groundbreaking climate assembly — the first climate assembly anywhere in the world designed around Te Tiriti o Waitangi.
We talk about why they challenged the conventional citizens’ assembly model, bringing mana whenua, community and rangatahi together as equals. We explore what it took to build trust across Porirua, why young people were given a genuine voice in the process, and what happened when people with very different perspectives were given the time and space to deliberate together. And we hear how the assembly ultimately reached consensus — with its recommendations now influencing council policy and continuing community action.
We’d like to thank the group for taking the time to speak with us for this episode.
