Do therapy dogs need certification?
A therapy dog is a pet that accompanies their owner into specific settings for the benefit of the residents or clients in the setting and/or as part of a therapeutic intervention. Our therapy dog program provides formal therapy dog certification for Canine Companions eligible teams in all regions within specific geographical locations. There was a ton of misinformation out about certifications for ESAs and service dogs, so to clarify, ESA certifications can ONLY BE RECEIVED through a medical professional. You do not register online. Service dogs DO NOT require certifications in the US. The two questions businesses may ask are: is the dog a service animal required because of a disability? And what work or task has the dog been trained to perform? Please make sure you refer to the ADA website when you have questions about working animals.
Do Breeder/Caretakers get first right of refusal for their dogs?
According to Canine.org, they are offered the first right of refusal to adopt puppies released before they are placed with a puppy raiser. From asking other raisers, B/C USUALLY get first right of refusal with the breeder dogs over puppy raisers. All adoption processes are subject to change depending on Canine Companions. All dogs are “owned” by Canine Companions, so whatever happens after they are retired or released is ultimately up to the organization.
What is LIMA training?
LIMA stands for least intrusive, minimally aversive. It is a style of dog training that prioritizes the well-being of the dog above all else. It uses the most positive and gentlest methods to understand the root cause of behavioral issues and creates positive learning environments.
