You expect the grief to hit on move-in day. The last hug, the drive home, the quiet car.
But for many moms, it doesn’t come then. It comes later — in the grocery store, mid-laundry, walking past a bedroom door that used to be open.
In this episode, Michelle shares the moment grief actually found her: not during the goodbye, but weeks later, standing in a hallway outside her son’s empty room. She explores what she calls secondary loss — the quieter losses underneath the obvious one — and why grief doesn’t disappear just because we tell ourselves we should be fine.
Michelle also offers a reframe for the phrase “empty nest,” and asks a gentler question for this season:not what did I lose, but what is this space asking me to discover next.
