In this episode of Sisterhood of Sound, Maria Mendes welcomes the extraordinary Lucy Woodward — a vocalist, songwriter and performer whose career spans more than 25 years across jazz, blues, pop and beyond.
Born in London and raised in New York City and the Netherlands, Lucy has released nine studio albums as a bandleader, won two BMI Awards for her contribution to “There’s Gotta Be More to Life,” and collaborated with Charlie Hunter, Snarky Puppy and Pink Martini. Her versatile voice and vocal arrangements have also contributed to projects involving Rod Stewart, Céline Dion, Chaka Khan, Barbra Streisand and Carole King, while her music has appeared in films including What a Girl Wants, The Blind Side and Ice Princess.
Beyond music, Lucy carries a powerful commitment to social justice, rooted in a family legacy of activism and education. From her first peace march in Washington, D.C., at age 12 to her work supporting Afghan refugee girls through SOLA (School of Leadership, Afghanistan), her dedication to making a difference extends far beyond the stage.
In this candid conversation, Lucy reflects on the lessons of a life in music, learning to trust her instincts, speaking up instead of pleasing others, and finding the confidence to protect her artistic and personal values.
