a love letter to Oakland
Baba Afolabi is a Nigerian-born entrepreneur and community advocate who has called Oakland home for over two decades. After immigrating to the U.S. at age 21, he established himself as a business leader and civic voice in the city. Baba is the founder of Mushin Sports Lounge, an upscale, internationally themed bar in downtown Oakland. The concept originated from a graduate school project aimed at addressing community needs. In 2024, Afolabi ran for Oakland City Council in District 3, focusing on economic revitalization, small business support, and pragmatic solutions to homelessness and public safety. Although he was not elected, his campaign highlighted his commitment to community-driven change and his belief in the power of entrepreneurship to uplift neighborhoods. Baba continues to be an active figure in Oakland, advocating for policies that foster economic growth and community well-being. He is also a father and remains dedicated to shaping a prosperous future for the city he proudly calls home.
