In today's episode, we are sitting down with Dr. Sophia Murphy, Owner and Founder of Healthy Synergy, LLC. A Licensed Professional Counselor with over 17 years of experience, Sophia is working to create safe spaces for all individuals to ask the hard questions, understand their authentic selves, and recognize that we can truly honor all the intersections and identities throughout our lives.
In this spanning and wide-ranging conversation, we discuss how safe spaces can be created, the culture of therapy, working with diverse clientele, reshaping traditional or familial patterns of toxic masculinity, the trends of survival that emerged post-Covid, and the challenging and emotionally taxiing state of the world right now.
Key takeaways that really impacted us? Sophia talks extensively about interacting with our feelings rather than ignore or bury them, especially those emotions like sadness, anxiety, disappointment, and grief. These tend to be emotions we feel bad about for even having. We talk about how to interact with them and how it's okay to feel what you are feeling right now. While we can't control our feelings, we can control our behavior and what we do with those feelings. We also discuss the importance of staying curious, rather than judgemental, both for ourselves and others. And just because there are ”standards” out there, meaning we are taught how to feel, what's ”appropriate”, we ”need” to be productive, it doesn't mean these are good standards, or the ones we should live by.
There are so many gems in this episode! Listen and please share with friends!
