Our parents often entered marriage with a very different idea of partnership. Marriage was about responsibility, stability, family, raising children and building a life together. Romance and emotional fulfilment were often secondary. But millennials want something more.We want our spouse to be our best friend, soulmate, lover, therapist, co-parent, financial partner, travel companion, emotional support system, intellectual equal and biggest cheerleader. We want the responsibilities of marriage, but we also want romance, friendship, emotional intimacy, equality, attraction and companionship. And perhaps that’s where modern marriage gets complicated. Are millennials simply raising the standards of marriage? Or are we expecting one person to fulfil every emotional and personal need we have?In this episode, we explore how the idea of marriage has changed across generations, why romance has become such an important expectation, whether social media has made our expectations unrealistic, and whether we are chasing a perfect marriage instead of learning to build a resilient one.Because maybe the goal isn’t to go back to our parents’ “responsibility without romance” model.Maybe it’s to find a marriage where responsibility doesn’t kill romance and romance doesn’t make us forget responsibility. What do you think? Are millennials expecting too much from marriage?
