This episode follows UW Health’s expansion of their clinical Artificial Intelligence (AI) ambient listening tool implementation across the health system through a conversation with Rebecca (Becky) Kohler, Chief Nursing Informatics Officer at UW Health, and Dr. Ann Weiben, Assistant Professor of Nursing and fellow in the American Medical Informatics Association. Ms. Kohler and Dr. Weiben co-led the initiative designed to introduce an ambient listening tool into inpatient nursing care at UW Health’s East Madison Hospital.
Through a discussion of the Ambient Listening for Nursing project aims and opportunities, the two leaders–one a clinical, the other a research nurse informaticist–bring their unique take on the value that a Learning Health Systems’ data-driven approach brings to clinical care, focusing on its ability to amplify quality improvement and other heatlh system priorities. We explore the trend among health systems of integrating AI into clinical care and the issues it raises for nursing as a discipline, address some of the anxieties among nursing staff and patients about the use of AI in healthcare, and discuss the challenges of conducting nursing-related research.
