Seven days. One cursed videotape. And one of the most unforgettable horror movie villains of all time.
This month on Dom's Film Club, I'm joined by Sonita to discuss Gore Verbinski's The Ring (2002), starring Naomi Watts — a film she's considered one of her favourites since watching it at a sleepover over 20 years ago.
For Sonita, The Ring has remained terrifying through countless rewatches. For me, it was a surprisingly enjoyable discovery: less of the relentless jump-scare horror I'd expected, and more of a brilliantly atmospheric supernatural mystery.
Together, we explore what makes the film so effective, why horror appeals to some people more than others, and how the story builds towards one of the genre's most iconic endings.
Along the way, we break down every image in the cursed videotape, piece together Samara Morgan's disturbing backstory, investigate the rules of her curse, and reveal an alternate ending featuring Chris Cooper that was cut from the finished film.
We also compare the American remake with the original Japanese film Ringu (1998) and Koji Suzuki's novel, explore the remarkable and contrasting lives of the film's two child actors, and examine the creative decisions behind its eerie green cinematography, supernatural imagery and haunting atmosphere.
Finally, we reflect on The Ring's legacy and discover where it ranks among Sonita's favourite movies of all time.
