In this episode of 8158: Stories of Sacrifice, we honor the life, service, and sacrifice of Correctional Officer William Diaz-Pagan of the Puerto Rico Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation.
On November 12, 1994, Officer Diaz-Pagan was driving an unmarked department vehicle when he was ambushed and fatally shot. Those responsible fled the scene, leaving behind a family, a department, and a community mourning the loss of one of their own.
His name is forever recorded among America’s fallen law-enforcement professionals, but his story also represents a group of first responders whose service is too often overlooked: correctional officers.
Behind prison walls, corrections professionals walk into an environment most of us will never experience. They maintain order, protect lives, respond to emergencies, and carry the responsibility of returning home safely after every shift—knowing there are no guarantees.
William Diaz-Pagan’s watch ended more than three decades ago, but time does not erase sacrifice.
Today, we speak his name.
We remember the officer behind the badge.
And we make sure Correctional Officer William Diaz-Pagan is never forgotten. 💙
